SOFIA SHARP

An LREI High School Student's Senior Project

For my senior project I strived to find the connection between painting and photography through how the subjects were expressed differently in the mediums. I chose to focus on portraits mostly of people I have relationships with. For my paintings, I viewed photos taken pre-quarantine and my photos included in this project were taken during or just before quarantine. Being confined to my NYC apartment, most of my photos are of my family. For the majority of high school I studied Studio Art and this year I decided to explore photography for two trimesters and it taught me to be much more aware of my surroundings. My photos cover multiple locations; Florida, Ithaca, NY, Central Park and the Upper East Side. I used a point and shoot camera, a polaroid and painted with acrylic paint. I tried to express my relationship with the subjects and found more so with my paintings, I was able to guide the viewer with how I wanted them to see my subject. That was more difficult to do with my photographs as an unedited lens told the story.  It was more in the order and the arrangement of the photographs that I conveyed something about my relationships. Using both mediums deepened my understanding of my relationships with those surrounding me.

THANK YOU!

SUSAN NOW:

Susan is the photography teacher at LREI. She is an incredibly talented artist and caring teacher. Her passion for art inspired my new path in photography. From spending lunches together to zoom calls throughout quarantine, my Senior Project would not have happened without her.

OLIVIA SHARP:

Olivia is a recent college graduate who became my painting mentor. She also attended LREI and did painting for her Senior Project. She went on to study Political Science with a Studio Art minor at Lafayette College.
